People: Asilia S. Backus, Associate
Biography
Ms. Backus is a senior associate in the Labor and Employment Department in the Chicago office of Seyfarth Shaw LLP where she represents management in non-union and union settings, including employers in the financial, hospitality, industrial, insurance, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, retail and technology industries.
Ms. Backus' practice has a particular emphasis on the litigation of single-plaintiff discrimination, harassment and retaliation cases against private plaintiffs and the EEOC, including claims filed under Title VII, Section 1981, ADEA, ADA, FMLA and state law equivalents in federal courts, state courts and arbitration. Ms. Backus also has significant experience counseling in-house counsel and human resources professionals regarding personnel issues including hiring, discipline and termination. She regularly advises employers regarding the legal implications of employment decisions.
In addition to her single-plaintiff litigation and counseling practice, Ms. Backus also has experience with complex discrimination litigation involving multi-plaintiff and class claims, as well as with single-plaintiff and class and collective action wage and hour litigation.
