People: Beth L. Gobeille, Associate
Biography
Ms. Gobeille is a Managing Associate in the Boston office of Seyfarth Shaw LLP. A member of the Labor and Employment Department, she focuses on single-plaintiff litigation and wage and hour litigation matters.
Ms. Gobeille has experience in the representation of management in a wide spectrum of labor and employment law matters, including the litigation of discrimination, wage and hour, Family and Medical Leave Act, and retaliation claims. Her successful representation of management against discrimination claims has included those asserted under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Massachusetts’ Chapter 151B, and other state laws. She has also defeated breach of contract and employment-related tort actions.
As a member of the Wage and Hour Litigation Practice Group, Ms. Gobeille has defended employers against a wide variety of claims under state and federal law, including nonpayment of overtime wages, employee misclassification, and violations of the Massachusetts Tips Statute (M.G.L. ch. 149, § 152A). She is a contributing editor of Seyfarth’s publication Massachusetts Peculiarities: An Employer’s Guide to Wage & Hour Law in the Bay State. Ms. Gobeille has wage and hour litigation and counseling experience in a number of different industries, including financial services, retail, and hospitality.
In addition, Ms. Gobeille also regularly counsels employers on such topics as state and federal wage and hour law compliance, disability accommodation, family and medical leave, workplace investigations, performance assessment and discipline, reductions in force, defamation, the development of handbooks and policies, CORI reform compliance, and terminations of employees in sensitive situations. She also provides counseling on employment law issues to a variety of charitable organizations, and she regularly provides pro bono legal services to victims of violent crime through the Victim Rights Law Center.
During law school, Ms. Gobeille served as an Editor of the American Journal of Law and Medicine, the most-cited health law journal in the United States. Ms. Gobeille worked in the mental health field prior to becoming an attorney, specializing in individual and family counseling and teaching undergraduate psychology courses at a major east-coast university.
