Kathleen L. Ames is senior counsel in the New York office of Seyfarth Shaw LLP and a member of the firm's Administrative Charge Team and Single-Plaintiff Litigation Practice Group. Ms. Ames has significant experience responding to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEOC) and Department of Labor (DOL) charges of unlawful employment practices, and has conducted on-site investigations with the EEOC, DOL and state agencies.  She has defended companies in both federal and state discrimination lawsuits, handling these matters from inception through appellate practice. Additionally, Ms. Ames has overseen matters involving insurance defense, accountant's malpractice, insurance coverage, bankruptcy proceedings, contractual disputes, and general liability defense.

As a member of the Administrative Charge Team (ACT), Ms. Ames' practice is primarily devoted to defending employers against claims of discrimination, harassment, retaliation and other employment-related issues before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and state fair employment agencies. The ACT is an elite team of experienced attorneys dedicated to effectively and efficiently responding to all aspects of administrative charges nationwide. Faced with increasingly aggressive governmental agendas, the ACT has developed innovative strategies for managing burdensome agency investigations and addressing wide-ranging requests for information. Moreover, by taking a proactive approach to the charge process and utilizing sophisticated analytic technologies, the ACT is able to identify potentially problematic employer practices and collaborate with clients to formulate preventative strategies to minimize potential future costs and litigation.

Having served as senior counsel for one of the United States’ largest health benefits companies, Ms. Ames is well versed in drafting human resources policies and procedures; providing in-depth training to human resources staff regarding federal, state and local laws relative to employment practices including ADEA, FMLA, ADA, retaliation, best practices for investigating allegations of discrimination as well as disability and workers’ compensation claims, E-Verify, I-9 compliance and visas; providing guidance relative to employee terminations and reductions in force, including WARN notification; as well as drafting severance plans and releases.
