People: Taron K. Murakami, Associate
Biography
Ms. Murakami is an associate in the Labor and Employment Practice Group at Seyfarth Shaw LLP. Ms. Murakami counsels and represents employers in single-plaintiff and multi-plaintiff litigation regarding all facets of employment law, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the National Labor Relations Act. Ms. Murakami has extensive experience taking and defending depositions, arguing motions before federal and state court judges, and investigating and defending claims before administrative agencies, such as the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Ms. Murakami regularly practices in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and Virginia state courts. Ms. Murakami also counsels employers on hiring, termination of employees, employee grievances, harassment investigations, employee handbooks and policies, wage payment laws, and other personnel issues.
Ms. Murakami has an extensive pro bono practice and in 2009 was named Seyfarth’s Pro Bono Associate of the Year. She has successfully represented two asylum applicants and a petitioner for immigration status under the Violence Against Women Act. Ms. Murakami has also prepared an amicus brief for a Supreme Court case on the Voting Rights Act and has assisted several non-profit organizations with employment matters.
