Casey J. Teele McCoy is an associate in the Labor & Employment department of Seyfarth Shaw LLP’s Los Angeles office. She represents corporate clients in a variety of employment litigation, including sexual harassment, discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, wage and hour class actions and contract disputes in state and federal courts, and before administrative bodies (including the DFEH, DLSE and EEOC) and arbitral tribunals. Ms. McCoy has handled appeals in a number of class action matters, in both state and federal court. 

Outside of litigation, Ms. McCoy advises employers regarding various employment matters, including discrimination, harassment, wage and hour law, employee classifications, employee discipline and performance plans, drug and alcohol testing, family and medical leave management, disability discrimination laws, trade secrets, non-competition agreements, arbitration agreements, employee grievances, management training, and other personnel matters. She also provides guidance on termination matters, including resignations, lay-offs, reductions in force under WARN, and involuntary terminations.

Ms. McCoy regularly works with clients to conduct employment-related workplace investigations; audits of employment practices, including compliance with wage and hour law; and to train executives, management and staff regarding personnel matters, including sexual harassment and discrimination laws. In addition, Ms. McCoy assists employers by drafting employment handbooks, personnel policies, and other employment documents, including employment agreements, consulting/independent contractor agreements, confidentiality agreements, and arbitration agreements. She frequently presents on various employment topics, including wage and hour, leaves of absence, discrimination, harassment, electronic discovery, and social media in the workplace.

Representative Engagements

Defending a Fortune 500 company in wage and hour class and collective actions in federal and state court and binding arbitration.

Defending a closet-making company against statewide class action lawsuits brought by closet designers claiming unpaid wages, including commissions, and reimbursement for business-related expenses.

Obtaining favorable settlements of wage and hour claims, including overtime and meal and rest period claims, brought by employees of a payday lender in a class-wide arbitration and in state court.

Obtaining dismissal of claims for unpaid wages, overtime and meal and rest breaks brought by employees in state administrative proceedings.

Defending service and retail clients and management employees in wrongful termination, harassment and discrimination actions.

Helping a city limit issues and defendants in a discrimination and retaliation suit through summary judgment. The city ultimately prevailed on the remaining retaliation claim at trial.

Representing successfully a major automotive trading and supply chain specialist in the arbitration of a former employee’s grievance under a collective bargaining agreement.
 

Representing international service and retail clients in commercial litigation including successfully representing a plaintiff and counterclaim defendant involved in an international contract dispute.
