Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the California Legislaturewere more active this year than during the past two years in enacting new employment laws.  There are several new laws that senior human resource professionals and employment lawyers will need to know to ensure workplace compliance and avoid litigation.  Some of these new laws mandate notice to employees and will require new written personnel policies or changes to handbooks, while other laws will impact payroll operations.  The purpose of this Breakfast Briefing is to explain the details of the new laws and to offer practical guidance for the workplace.  We will also provide an update on key employment law cases from the past year and discuss issues likely to be addressed in the Legislature and the Courts in 2008.

Specific Briefing Topics Include:

  • Changes in California's minimum wage law
  • New leave law for military spouses
  • Key developments in classifying exempt employees
  • NLRB ruling on the use of e-mail in the workplace
  • More limits on the use of arbitration agreements
  • Other wage hour and EEO court decisions
  • EDD, FEHA, Dept. of Industrial Relations regulatory news
