Biography
Mr. Sherman is the National Chairperson of Seyfarth Shaw LLP’s Labor and Employment Department. The Labor and Employment Department is the firm’s largest, with more than 300 attorneys across nine offices.
A partner in the firm, Mr. Sherman has represented a wide range of employers since 1976. His practice is national in scope. He has been engaged as a counselor, advocate, and negotiator in some of the nation’s most widely reported labor disputes. By way of example, Mr. Sherman served as the outside labor advisor to a national supermarket chain in connection with the four-month strike and lockout of grocery workers in Southern California during 2003-2004. In 2001 and 2002, he served as chief negotiator for a major aluminum company during a two and one-half year strike and lockout of steelworkers in five plants in three states. From 1995-1997, he was the outside legal advisor to two national media companies during the two and one-half year multi-union strike against the major daily newspapers in Detroit. Representative industries in which Mr. Sherman has worked include aluminum, automotive, cable, cement, health care, hospitality, laundry services, newspapers, supermarkets, telecommunications and tires.
Mr. Sherman has litigated numerous labor relations cases before the National Labor Relations Board, the United States District Courts, and the United States Courts of Appeal. He has represented management in hundreds of labor arbitrations. He has also served as management’s chief negotiator in many collective bargaining negotiations throughout the country.
Mr. Sherman is a Fellow of the College of Labor & Employment Lawyers, a member of Leading Lawyers, Illinois Super Lawyer and Best Attorneys Networks, and featured in Who’s Who Legal USA – Management Labour and Employment Lawyers, The Legal 500 United States, Marquis Who’s Who in American Law, and Who’s Who Legal – Illinois. Mr. Sherman is also named in The Best of the U.S. as one of the best employment lawyers in the country.
