M. John Burgess

Biography

Mr. Burgess is an associate in the Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation Department of Seyfarth Shaw LLP. He assists clients with all types of employee benefit plans, including tax-qualified pension plans, employee stock ownership plans, health and welfare plans and executive compensation arrangements. Mr. Burgess counsels clients on plan documentation (including drafting plan documents, SPDs, amendments, and plan administrative procedures), plan qualification (including representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service), and other benefit plan issues, including tax matters.

Mr. Burgess also advises inpatriate executives of international companies on various tax and benefits planning matters associated with their service in the United States, including tax residency issues and compensation planning.

Prior to attending law school, Mr. Burgess worked as an auditor for a big six accounting firm, where a part of his practice involved the audits of the financial statements of qualified retirement plans. He remains licensed by the State of Ohio as a certified public accountant.
