Employee Benefits and Compensation Practice Recognized in 2010 Edition of Legal 500

Legal 500 ranked Seyfarth Shaw’s Employee Benefits and Compensation practice as a national leader for 2010. The guide reported, “clients comment that the ‘service we receive is outstanding, I can count on prompt responses for help and advice,’ and ‘the knowledge of industry practices is very substantial and the quality of the work is excellent.’”

This year, Seyfarth Shaw’s Real Estate practice in Illinois is once again ranked as a leader in Legal 500. The guide reported that “Seyfarth Shaw’s real estate practice comprises more than 90 lawyers and spans nine states. The firm has reacted to the economic crisis by devoting extra attention to its corporate and institutional clients on distressed loans and properties. Although there has been an increasing focus on restructuring, workouts and enforcement proceedings, the team has continued to carry out transactional work, loan closings, leasing, co-op and condominium work.”

Seyfarth Shaw’s Immigration Practice Recognized by Chambers USA

The 2010 Chambers USA guide awarded Seyfarth Shaw’s California and Georgia Immigration practice groups the same rankings as last year, with a band 2 ranking for California and a band 3 ranking for Georgia. Interviewees praised Seyfarth Shaw, saying, “The firm is prominent in immigration law and has some excellent attorneys who really invest in their clients.” One client told Chambers, “We transferred our business to Seyfarth Shaw due to the firm’s responsiveness and quick turnaround times. It is a delight to work with.”

Seyfarth Shaw’s ERISA Litigation Practice Recognized by Chambers USA

Seyfarth Shaw’s national ERISA Litigation Practice group maintained its band 3 position in the 2010 edition of Chambers USA. Sources told Chambers, “[Seyfarth Shaw is] playing an increasingly prominent role in major matters and winning a lot of work. This is definitely a firm to keep an eye on.” According to the guide, “The group handles a high volume of cases and has particular expertise in representing clients in 401(k) expenses litigation…. The team also handles stock drop cases and matters relating to breach of fiduciary duty.”

Seyfarth Shaw’s Labor & Employment Practices Recognized by Chambers USA

In Chambers USA’s 2010 guide, the firm’s Labor & Employment department once again topped the charts in several regions and practices, maintaining all of the firm’s impressive standings from last year. Nationally, the firm continues to hold its band 2 ranking in Labor & Employment, its band 2 ranking in Retail, and its band 3 ranking in ERISA Litigation. Seyfarth Shaw’s regional offices all held on to their titles from last year, with the firm receiving Labor & Employment distinctions in 6 out of the 7 states in which the firm operates. The Illinois and Massachusetts offices earned band 1 rankings, the California office earned a band 2 ranking, and the Georgia, New York, and Washington, D.C. offices all earned band 3 rankings.

Seyfarth Shaw’s Construction practice is ranked in the second tier of law firms nationwide in Legal 500 this year. Legal 500 reported that “ [Seyfarth Shaw’s] ‘top-tier’ practice handles dispute resolution in addition to a wide range of non-contentious construction matters. It is highly regarded for its ‘exceptional’ service and experience of matters relating to government contracts.”

Many of Seyfarth Shaw’s Labor and Employment practices are recommended in the 2010 edition of Legal 500 US. Top honors went to Immigration, Labor and Employment Litigation, and Workplace and Employment Counseling, with all maintaining last year’s tier 1 ranking. Labor Management Relations received a tier 2 ranking, and ERISA Litigation, a newcomer this year, received a tier 3 ranking. One client interviewed by Legal 500 commented, “If I were to rank all firms, Seyfarth Shaw would be at the top.”

Seyfarth Shaw’s Construction Practice Recognized by Chambers USA

The 2010 Chambers USA guide recognized Seyfarth Shaw’s Washington, D.C. Construction practice with a band 2 ranking again this year. The nationwide practice also maintained the same ranking as last year, at band 3.

Chambers noted that Seyfarth Shaw’s Construction practice “combines contentious and non-contentious expertise, offering clients an impressive depth of representation. It covers contracts, teaming agreements, project management and a range of disputes. It also regularly assists clients with infrastructure projects on a global basis, and PPP work is a forte. The group's client base includes contractors, owners, architects, engineers and a variety of design professionals.”

Seyfarth Shaw is singled out in the 2010 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business as among the best law firms in multiple practice groups nationally and in regional markets, and for the second year in a row, 41 of the firm’s attorneys are individually ranked as leaders in their field. Seventeen of Seyfarth Shaw’s practice groups are ranked in the 2010 guide.

According to Chambers, “This firm is headquartered in Chicago and is particularly strong in the Midwest; however, its substantial network of offices from coast to coast ensures that it maintains a strong national reputation as well…. The team comprises more than 325 specialists, who cover everything from single plaintiff to class action litigation.”

Seyfarth Shaw’s Real Estate practice groups in Georgia and Illinois were both recognized with band 3 rankings. Nationally, Seyfarth Shaw maintained a band 2 ranking in Retail.

Clients reported to Chambers that Seyfarth is “top-notch in everything we have asked of them.” With respect to the Georgia office, clients added, “The attorneys suggest directions for us and cover issues that we had not thought of. Seyfarth Shaw’s Employee Benefits Practices Recognized by Chambers USA

Seyfarth Shaw maintained its band 2 ranking for Employee Benefits & Compensation in Illinois this year in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. The guide reported that “The employee benefits team is equally sizable and [as] diverse” as the Chicago office’s broad Labor & Employment bench.

Seyfarth Shaw Named One of Law360’s Employment Defense Firms of the Year

Seyfarth Shaw was honored as one of six law firms nationally to be named a management-side employment law firm of the year for 2009.

According to Law360’s January 1, 2010 article, “Employment Defense Firms of the Year,” “2009 was a big year” for labor & employment attorneys.  The article noted that “Seyfarth Shaw… earns a spot on Law360's list of standout management-side employment firms for several big wins in 2009,” and pointed to a few of the firm’s substantial victories on behalf of its clients, including:

  • Steven Lerman et al. v. City of Fort Lauderdale in which the article states that “…the Eleventh Circuit rejected the plaintiffs' appeal that the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act allowed for claims under the ADEA to survive a voluntarily release form shielding the city from liability under employment discrimination laws…”;
  • Hernandez et al. v. Hillsides Inc., in which the California Supreme Court ruled that the firm’s client’s employees at a home for abused children “had not suffered an invasion of privacy when their boss secretly monitored them to catch an employee suspected of looking at pornography on workplace computers…”;
  • Vinole et al. v. Countrywide, where “the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said a lower court had not abused its discretion by granting Countrywide's preemptive motion to deny class certification before the plaintiffs ever moved to certify…”; and
  • United Air Lines Inc. v. Air Line Pilots Association International in which the firm helped to convince the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit to uphold a ruling “that a pilots union had violated a collective bargaining agreement by initiating a work slowdown when the airline refused to renegotiate terms.”

Seyfarth Shaw is heralded in the 2009 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business as among the best law firms in multiple practice groups nationally and in regional markets, and 41 of the firm’s attorneys are also individually ranked as leaders in their field—up from 26 individually ranked attorneys last year.

Eighteen of Seyfarth Shaw’s practice groups are ranked in the 2009 guide. Newly ranked practice groups this year include Massachusetts Employee Benefits, California Immigration, National Construction, Georgia Immigration, and Georgia Real Estate. In addition, three practice groups moved upward in their rankings—New York Labor & Employment, California Labor & Employment, and Illinois Real Estate.

In Chambers USA's 2009 guide, the firm’s Labor & Employment department has once again topped the tables in several regions and practices. Regionally, the California and New York practices moved up in the rankings to achieve band 2 and band 3 rankings, respectively; the Illinois and Massachusetts Labor & Employment practices maintained band 1 rankings; and the Georgia and Washington, D.C. practices maintained band 3 rankings.

According to Chambers, “Labor and employment continues to play an integral role at this firm... Seyfarth ranked in band 2 for Employee Benefits & Compensation in both Illinois and Massachusetts this year in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. This marks the first year that the Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation practice in Massachusetts is ranked. The guide reported that respondents praised the group “for its work on deferred compensation regulations and for the quality and insightfulness of its advice, with its thorough work on reviewing corporate governance practices also attracting acclaim.”

Seyfarth Shaw's National ERISA Litigation Practice Group maintained its band 3 position in the 2009 edition of Chambers USA. Chambers reported, “Seyfarth Shaw has ramped up its ERISA litigation practice and is now regarded as a player on the national scene…. The group handles a variety of single plaintiff and class action matters, including alleged breaches of fiduciary duty, cash balance plan litigation and stock drop cases.” Chambers interviewees expressed that “The team is able to draw on the firm's employee benefits and labor and employment expertise to provide clients with well-rounded service.”

Seyfarth Shaw's Environment Practice - Illinois Recognized by Chambers USA

The 2009 Chambers USA guide once again recognized Seyfarth Shaw’s environmental practice in Illinois with a band 3 ranking. The guide reported, “Known as the environmental safety and toxic tort department, this group covers compliance, remediation, transactional matters and litigation, which includes an OSHA subgroup.”

A newly ranked practice area for Seyfarth Shaw, the Immigration practice enters the 2009 Chambers USA guide with a band 2 ranking for California and band 3 ranking for Georgia. Interviewees praised Seyfarth Shaw as “‘A… strong firm, with notable depth,’ this outfit has a high profile for its general business immigration work, in addition to its expertise on the crossover between criminal and immigration matters.” Further, clients of the Immigration practice who “come from the financial, chemical and technology sectors,” commented that the immigration group is “‘consistently available, answers all our inquiries and has impressively quick turnaround times.’”

New to the tables this year, Seyfarth Shaw’s Real Estate practice group in Georgia is recognized with a band 3 ranking, and the Real Estate practice group in Illinois moved upward in its ranking to band 2. Nationally, Seyfarth Shaw maintained a band 2 ranking in Retail.

Chambers observed of the Georgia practice, “This large group has a considerable regional profile, having been at the centre of several statewide leasing, financing and development matters recently.” Additionally, the Illinois practice is, “active in transactional work and has been visible on some particularly outstanding development matters for major commercial clients.” In addition, Chambers commented on the firm's “...impressive clientele in the retail sector.”

SF AIDS Legal Referral Panel Names Seyfarth An Outstanding Law Firm Partner

The San Francisco AIDS Legal Referral Panel (“ALRP”) recognized Seyfarth Shaw as an Outstanding Law Firm partner for the firm’s involvement with its Pro Bono Connections Initiative.

“ALRP is a local organization that provides direct services to people with living with AIDS and HIV, including legal services,” says San Francisco Labor & Employment associate Laura Maechtlen, who is a member of the ALRP’s board of directors. “They are known for using their resources wisely and you can feel good working for them. Seyfarth Shaw has made a commitment to supporting organizations that are providing high quality legal services.”

Laura and other firm attorneys handle pro bono cases referred by the ALRP and give MCLE presentations for other pro bono attorneys who agree to take on ALRP cases.

Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta Names Seyfarth Shaw the Law Firm of the Year

Pro Bono Partnership of Atlanta (“PBP-ATL”) presented Seyfarth Shaw with the “Law Firm of the Year” award. PBP-ATL’s mission is to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible for transactional lawyers at corporations and law firms to provide valuable pro bono services for nonprofit agencies serving the public interest in metropolitan Atlanta. In giving Seyfarth the award, PBP-ATL Executive Director Rachel Spears cited, among other things, the high percentage of our Atlanta lawyers who have taken on a matter and the multiple high quality seminars that our Atlanta lawyers have put on for PBP-ATL clients.

Atlanta Office Featured in Southern Business & Development

The firm’s Atlanta office was featured in the Winter 2008 issue of Southern Business & Development in the magazine’s article on the “Top 10 Law Firms that Understand Economic Development.” The article referred to Atlanta partner Dan McRae as an “economic development legal guru” who “has managed finance and investment transactions amounting to billions of dollars,” and was “the first attorney to be elected a director of the Georgia Economic Developers Association.”

The Fulton County Daily Report Awards Atlanta Attorney Erik Rodriguez for Pro Bono Service

Erik Rodriguez was recognized by The Daily Report with its consumer advocacy award for individual achievement representing a low-income family that was sold a termite-infested home. Erik, a Labor & Employment senior associate, was referred the case through the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. As secretary of the Georgia Hispanic Bar Association, Erik, who is bilingual, often fields calls from members of the Hispanic community and Spanish speakers to take on pro bono matters or provide referrals to other attorneys.

“I’m always struck by how grateful pro bono clients are. Many of them do not know their rights and are often fearful of the system. They are grateful to have someone stand up for them, which makes the work very rewarding,” Erik says. “I was proud to receive on behalf of the firm the award from The Daily Report. It is great attention for our office and the pro bono work that we are doing.”

San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP Awards Seyfarth for Pro Bono Service

Seyfarth Shaw LLP received the prestigious Circle of Friends Award for its commitment to pro bono and community service at the San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP 56th Annual Freedom and Friendship Gala. The NAACP's principal objective is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens of United States and eliminate race prejudice. Sheeva Ghassemi, a Labor & Employment associate in our San Francisco office, is SJ/SV NAACP's General Counsel.

“The SJ/SV NAACP is an organization that I have been involved with since 2003, when I was entering my first year of law school and wanted to find a way to participate in worthwhile pro bono work,” says Sheeva. “I have become fully invested in this organization and enjoy being able to aid the SJ/SV NAACP in providing pro bono legal services to those in need. It’s a testament to Seyfarth Shaw’s commitment to pro bono that it was a 2008 Circle of Friends Award recipient.”

The Builders Association Awards Seyfarth for Corporate Citizenship

The Builders Association -- the leading trade association in Chicago for the commercial construction industry -- presented Seyfarth Shaw with its Corporate Citizenship Award for 2008. This honor celebrates the recipient’s dedication to giving back to the community and the firm was selected as a result of its community service activities, charitable giving and pro bono legal services. Seyfarth is committed to being an outstanding corporate citizen and an active contributor to communities where its people work and live. The firm’s Construction Practice Group has embraced that commitment by producing educational materials for industry members and mentoring the next generation of workers. Laura J. Maechtlen Elected President of National Lesbian and Gay Law Association

Laura J. Maechtlen, an attorney with the Labor and Employment Department in the firm’s San Francisco office, has been elected President of the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association, a national association of lawyers, judges and other legal professionals, law students, activists, and affiliated lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender legal organizations.

Rob Whitman Receives Award from Lawyers Alliance for NY for Pro Bono Leadership

NY Labor & Employment partner Rob Whitman received the 2008 Award for Pro Bono Leadership from Lawyers Alliance for New York ("Lawyers Alliance"), in recognition of his 11 years of outstanding service as a volunteer attorney. Lawyers Alliance provides business and transactional legal services for New York City nonprofit organizations and is a leading pro bono referral agency for the NY office.

"This award highlights Lawyers Alliance's philosophy that pro bono work is not just for junior associates," says Rob.

Rob has provided pro bono employment counseling to numerous nonprofit organizations referred by Lawyers Alliance. He was also one of the first attorneys to join Lawyers Alliance’s Nonprofit Employment Law Helpline panel. Rob also received a Cornerstone Award from Lawyers Alliance in 2006.

Krista Pratt receives Shining Star Award for Pro Bono Service

Boston Labor & Employment partner Krista Pratt received the Shining Star Award from the Victim Rights Law Center ("VRLC"). VRLC is a non-profit organization that advocates for and provides free legal services to sexual assault victims and is a pro bono referral agency for the Boston office. Each year, the VRLC and a panel of pro bono peers pay special tribute to a "shining" attorney whose exemplary dedication and accomplishments have proven most inspiring.
