Gerald Skoning’s opinion piece, “Illiana? Indianois? Either Way, Merger Spells Deficit Relief,” was published in the July 28, 2008 issue of Crain’s Chicago Business. In his piece, Gerry discusses the idea of a merger between Illinois and Indiana and what that would mean for the new state. Gerry explains, “Indiana ended its fiscal year on July 1 with its third consecutive balanced budget and a $1.4-billion surplus.” While in Illinois, the budget crisis is uniquely embarrassing. He notes, “Indiana’s surplus would go a long way toward paying off Illinois’ cumulative deficit.” In conclusion Gerry opines, “The proposed Illinois-Indiana merger would be followed by a welcome reduction in Springfield bureaucracy and a realignment of government to respond to economic realities.”
