John Sherrill Profiled in Fulton County Daily Report
04/13/2006
A front page article ("Arbitration taking on Olympic proportions") in the April 10, 2006 issue of the Fulton County Daily Report profiles the work of John Sherrill, and other attorneys, as arbitrators for the U. S. Olympic Committee. Reporting on the recent ABA Dispute Resolution Conference in Atlanta the article notes, "Like advocates of curling, synchronized swimming and modern pentathlon, participants in another obscure Olympic activity - arbitration - say they deal with tough competitors, tricky rules and high stakes."
John, a member of the arbitration panel for the U.S. Olympic Committee since Atlanta played host in 1996, remembered mediations between two competing equestrian organizations that dragged on extensively. "I finally forced them to produce the financials for both organizations," he recalled, "and that's when they decided that the other guys weren't so bad after all and merged." As a small but high-stakes arbitration niche, athletic disputes offer their own challenges, particularly in an era when performance-enhancing drugs - or the allegations of their use - can effectively derail an athlete's career.
