Marc Gurell was quoted in "JVs For Partial NYC Tower Stakes Pose Control, Tax Issues," a March 30 story from Law360 on the number of factors, some functions of market conditions and others based on tax structure, causing more owners of Manhattan trophy properties to enter a joint venture with a new partner and sell, say, a 49 percent stake in the property. Gurell said that while it is clearly attractive to avoid payment of a transfer tax, great caution should be exercised in structuring these transactions.
