Leon Rodriguez, partner of Seyfarth’s Labor & Employment department and member of the firm’s Health Law group, is presenting the Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association hosted webinar "Immigration Law Update: Healthcare Response if ICE Comes Calling" on April 25, 2017.

Healthcare providers have been and remain committed to caring for all people who come for treatment. Recent developments in federal immigration and travel policies have created substantial confusion for providers related to ensuring a stable healthcare workforce as well as protecting patient rights to receive medically necessary care. In addition to the various Presidential Executive Orders relating to border and immigration policies, there are also new enforcement priorities that may impact healthcare operations and clinical practices.

Given the significant impact the new immigration policies will have on accessing care and treatment for many minority populations, Leon will provide some context as to the current environment and consideration of best practices by healthcare providers. Leon is the former Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at the Department of Homeland Security and prior to that was also the Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

This webinar will cover:
  1. The current status of immigration policies that are being implemented by the federal agencies;
  2. The current legal requirements that must be followed by law enforcement when they come to a healthcare provider's facility/clinic/practice seeking information;
  3. Considering ways to communicate with employees (current and future) and patients about the changing immigration landscape, including reassuring critical employee/patient populations; and
  4. Understanding best practices to prepare for potential enforcement activity, including interactions with ICE and other federal agencies seeking patient or employee information, to understand the perspective of the agents as they are seeking information.
