Laura Maechtlen, Labor & Employment partner in Seyfarth’s San Francisco office, was named one of the top lawyers in her field by the Daily Journal.
In her profile, the Daily Journal recounts how Maechtlen knocked out disability discrimination claims against a client in the first Northern District lawsuit brought under the new authority by the state Department of Fair Employment and Housing to bring such claims directly in court instead of its own administrative hearings. She argued that the DFEH went beyond the scope of its power by bringing federal claims.
In June, U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar agreed, ruling that the “DFEH does not have this power.”
“Clearly, the DFEH is trying to test the waters with its scope and authority on bringing these claims,” Maechtlen told the Daily Journal. “The ruling definitely shrunk the case.”
