Seyfarth Shaw LLP announced today that Gregory A. Markel has joined the firm’s Litigation department as a partner in Seyfarth’s New York office, which has grown by more than 100 attorneys over the past decade. Markel comes from Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP in New York.

Markel’s practice focuses on high-stakes litigation regarding securities and antitrust issues, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, and directors and officers defense. In addition, he also handles high level internal investigations involving complex financial issues and is often retained by corporate boards of directors to handle serious internal matters. Recognized as a “legend” by Lawdragon magazine, Markel is one of only 50 lawyers in the United States to have been named to the Lawdragon 500 in each of the last ten years.

“Greg is a preeminent commercial litigator who has built a national reputation for handling the most complex litigation matters over the course of his career,” said Kate Perrelli, chair of Seyfarth’s Litigation department. “As a nationally known trial lawyer, Greg strengthens our New York litigation group, and further bolsters our corporate and financial services internal investigation and litigation capabilities nationally.”

Markel is a member of the Business Law, Litigation and Antitrust sections of the American Bar Association; the Federal Bar Council; the City Bar Committee on Securities Litigation; the Securities Industry Association – Compliance & Legal Division; the New York State Bar Association, Commercial Litigation Section, and is a Fellow of the New York Bar Foundation. He currently sits on the charitable boards of the Legal Aid Society, Junior Achievement of New York, Historical Society for New York Courts and the New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA) where he also serves as Chairman of its Center for Corporate Governance.

“Greg’s focus in financial services, corporate governance, securities and antitrust litigation will add bench strength locally and nationally to our teams,” said John Napoli, co-managing partner of Seyfarth’s New York office.

“Greg is the real deal with an exceptional reputation of advising clients in the most serious litigation matters. He is an important and strategic addition as we continue to grow our Litigation practice in New York and across the firm,” said Lorie Almon, co-managing partner of Seyfarth’s New York office.

A frequent writer and speaker, Markel received his J.D. from Yale Law School and earned a M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Michigan. He received a B.A. from Columbia University.

Markel’s arrival follows the recent addition of litigation partners Jeremy Cohen, Tonya Esposito Oliver and Andrew Boutros.
