Puya counsels clients on AI-related risks and opportunities across the technology life cycle. His work addresses the intersection of AI with intellectual property, trade secrets, privacy, cybersecurity, and commercial risk. He also helps clients evaluate emerging technologies, protect AI-related innovation, and address legal issues associated with the use and commercialization of AI.

Puya maintains a broad intellectual property practice. He advises clients on patent strategy, patentability, freedom to operate, infringement, validity, reexamination, reissue, and litigation support. He also prepares and prosecutes patent applications before the US Patent and Trademark Office and assists with trademark prosecution and oppositions.

Puya also serves as the principal intellectual property, privacy, cybersecurity, and information technology resource for Seyfarth’s representations and warranties insurance team. In that role, he evaluates technology-related risks in transactions and advises on issues relevant to underwriting and claims, including ownership and protection of intellectual property, data practices, cybersecurity exposure, and information technology matters.

Before practicing law, Puya worked as a software quality assurance engineer at Symantec for nearly a decade. He developed ad-blocking technology that resulted in US Patent No. 8,918,515. That experience gives Puya firsthand insight into the perspectives of engineers, inventors, and technology owners. It also helps him explain complex legal issues in clear terms and align legal strategy with his clients’ technical and commercial objectives.

Puya’s technical background spans artificial intelligence, robotics, software, computer networks, microprocessors, wireless communications, internet-connected devices, digital television signaling, cellular devices, and consumer technology. He has also worked with innovations involving mechanical devices, apparel, and household goods. This range allows Puya to engage directly with technical teams and quickly understand technologies across industries.
