2021-2023 Pro Bono & Philanthropy Report

Compassion. Action. Impact.

We take a holistic approach to giving back to our communities by integrating our pro bono legal services, charitable giving programs, community service activities, and sustainability initiatives. Our programs follow our guideposts of Compassion, Action, and Impact: we care about the communities in which we live and work, so we take action to preserve and improve them, ultimately making a meaningful positive difference in the world.

A Message from Lorie Almon, Firm Chair & Managing Partner

Seyfarth’s culture has always proudly supported taking the initiative to give back to the communities in which we live and work. As legal professionals, we are uniquely equipped to help people and organizations who cannot otherwise afford legal representation navigate the legal system. We are also well-positioned to promote access to justice for underserved people and communities. That is why Seyfarth has long committed to pro bono work and why our lawyers and legal professionals annually invest thousands of hours providing legal assistance across hundreds of pro bono matters.

Our commitment to giving back doesn’t end with the practice of law. Colleagues across the firm also selflessly donate their time, money, and talent to lift up people and causes in our communities, and ultimately make the world a better place.

What brings me the greatest pride is that our people commit themselves to this work without fanfare and without being asked. This is a true testament to the culture of commitment, teamwork and excellence we have built here at the firm.

This report celebrates these selfless efforts by profiling just some of the work of our colleagues and teammates. I am grateful to all of you who go above and beyond to give back to our communities, each and every day.

A Message from Ashley Cano, Pro Bono & Philanthropy Partner

As Seyfarth’s Pro Bono & Philanthropy Partner, I have the tremendous honor and privilege of witnessing each and every day the boundless generosity and kindness of our people all across the firm. Our attorneys and staff selflessly donate their time, talents, energy and funds to give back to the communities in which we live and work.

Every year, hundreds of Seyfarthians take on incredibly impactful pro bono matters. This includes helping refugees apply for asylum, helping veterans access benefits, assisting with adoptions of foster children, and helping people with housing issues and criminal records relief. Our lawyers also provide invaluable advice and counsel to nonprofits that support the most vulnerable members of our communities.

Our people also regularly participate in firm-sponsored community service events, dedicate their time to local nonprofits and donate money in response to humanitarian disasters. Our people truly embody the spirit of service, and their efforts help children and people in need, advance the arts and sciences, preserve our natural resources, and promote racial justice and human rights.

There simply is not room in this report to profile all the ways our people have given back over the past three years. That said, we aim here to provide some highlights.

This report also would not be complete without a tremendous thank you to my predecessor in this role, the incomparable Allegra Nethery. Allegra built Seyfarth’s pro bono and philanthropy programs from the ground up in 2007. From then until she retired from the practice of law in 2022, she and our wonderful Senior Pro Bono & Philanthropy Manager Kimberly McClain worked tirelessly to build and strengthen these programs.
