Preparing expert testimony in jury trials may be the single most challenging task in getting ready for trial. It is not enough for your outside counsel to retain a brilliant expert, with a scientifically airtight theory. Trial lawyers must be able to distill the expert’s complex theories and present them in a way that every juror can understand. Visual aids such as charts, maps, drawings, and animations can help explain otherwise complicated issues. The bottom line is that if the jury does not understand your company’s expert witness, or her evidence is deemed inadmissible, she will not be persuasive at trial.

In the next installment in Seyfarth’s Trial Education Series, our seasoned trial attorneys, along with Todd Fairbanks and Claire Luna from Jury Impact, will discuss the ways that you, as in-house counsel, can ensure that your expert’s testimony has the most impact on the jury.

Specifically, the panel will address:

  • How to ensure that your expert’s testimony will be admissible and will help the jury reach its verdict;
  • Ways to effectively present voluminous, complicated, statistical, or damages evidence using pictures, animation and charts;
  • Effective cross-examination techniques for opposing experts at trial;
  • How jurors perceive experts and weigh their testimony;
  • Developments relating to expert testimony in class actions, collective actions, and large-scale agency lawsuits.
