Los Angeles immigration attorney Angelo Paparelli was quoted in a January 20, 2011 article in The Wall Street Journal. The article reported that the Obama administration is creating an audit office designed to discover employers who are hiring illegal immigrants. According to the article, the Employment Compliance Inspection Center will be comprised of specialists who examine the I-9 files of companies targeted for audits. Any illegal immigrants found on an audited company’s payroll will be fired.

Some small business owners have expressed concern about the new center, claiming they don’t have the resources to police their workers. Employers also worry that workers might file discrimination suits if they are asked to produce additional proof of citizenship. “We need to take employers out of the business of performing government functions, like playing immigration police,” asserted Angelo.
