Christopher Robertson Quoted in Investment News
"House Republicans aim to re-route whistle-blowers"
Seyfarth Shaw Boston partner Christopher Robertson was quoted in Investment News on May 12. The article discussed Representative Michael Grimm's (R-N.Y.) proposed draft legislation requiring whistle-blowers to report issues first to their employer's internal compliance systems before being eligible for a monetary reward or "bounty" from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
While Grimm's goal was for the bill to be bipartisan, it received a lot of resistance from Democrats who felt it was allowing companies to "maintain a veil" over any wrongdoing.
Chris agreed with Grimm in supporting corporate compliance channels and allowing them a chance to work before getting the SEC involved. He said of the SEC, "They completely underestimated the level of comments they got. I'm glad that they're taking the time to put in a program that addresses what people's concerns are. If either side [plaintiffs or corporate counsels] don't have confidence in the system, it won't work."
