Daily Journal Profiles Jesse Miller on His Dual Careers in the Military and Legal Practice
The Daily Journal profiled partner Jesse Miller, highlighting his retirement from the military after 34 years of distinguished service. Miller concluded his military career as assistant division commander for operations for the 40th Infantry Division of the California Army National Guard, retiring with the rank of “full-bird” colonel.
Miller said his dual careers -- one in combat arms, the other in high-stakes business disputes -- shaped each other in ways that defined both his professional and personal life.
Reflecting on the impact of his military journey, Miller shared:
“I wouldn't be who I am personally or professionally without my military journey. I wouldn't be a good lawyer -- I wouldn't be a winner for my clients. Leadership is humbling, but I learned how to meet mission in an ambiguous environment while protecting my soldiers. Getting results and moral leadership go together.”
He further explains how the military has shaped his litigation style saying: "Leveraging military skills and experiences, well, I see that as a big edge for my clients inside and outside of the courtroom. I endeavor to bring the same vision, agility and discipline with me to my legal fights as I did in the Army. But it's more than personal sacrifice and hard work. It's about approaching litigation as a team sport, the integration of people and resources, the planning, remaining aligned, and the synchronization of operations to produce the maximum effects at the decisive points in a case."
