“If You Cut, Paste and Send, You Might Also End Up Paying”

In a September 24 article in the Boston Business Journal, IP partner Ilan Barzilay discussed the potential penalties that individuals and companies could face for the misuse of copyright information when they cut, copy and paste articles in their entirety or even pieces of a story used for a blog. Ilan explained, “copying too much of an online article can constitute copyright infringement. There is no ‘de minimis’ exception to copyright infringement and very few courts would find fair use for this kind of thing. Users are circulating content without permission, potentially taking traffic away from the author site. Those kinds of infractions, while common, can have serious consequences.”
