Seyfarth Shaw Chicago office partner Joel Rubin wrote a chapter titled, "Understanding the Complexities of the Real Estate Transaction Process," published in Aspatore Books' Structuring Commercial Real Estate Transactions. The chapter discusses current trends in transactions, and circumstances driving these trends; effective practices for commercial real estate transactions, which include understanding a client's needs and goals; and challenges attorneys face when handling these transactions.

Emphasizing the need for lawyers to take control of transactions in what is now a highly competitive market, Joel recommends to always strive for excellence, know one's client, be well versed in alternative structures and approaches, store whatever is learned about a matter for possible future use, be able to break down issues to achieve novice understanding and have the ability to keep it simple, move quickly and efficiently—but in line with the client—to carry out the transaction, and listen before responding. Joel also encourages lawyers to work as a team with opposing counsel when possible.

Joel concludes by reminding lawyers to never compromise one's principles and ethics, pointing out that it is essential to maintain one's reputation as an excellent lawyer.
