SHRM featured Leon Rodriguez, co-chair of Seyfarth's Immigration practice, in its August 18 article, “Why Supreme Court Asylum Status Case Involving Green Card Matters.” The piece examines a forthcoming US Supreme Court case that could determine whether individuals whose asylum status has been terminated remain eligible to adjust their status and obtain lawful permanent residency.

Rodriguez discussed the employment implications of immigration status changes and how employers may evaluate criminal convictions differently from immigration authorities, noting:

“I think it is fair to say that most criminal convictions that lead to the loss of an immigration benefit are ones that employers might also find as disqualifying for employment processes. Still there is a wide range of conduct, such as offenses related to minor drug possession or offenses that are remote in time, that could result in loss of immigration status while not necessarily being seen treated as disqualifying by an employer.”
