CHICAGO (February 20, 2024) - Seyfarth Shaw LLP announced today that James M. Sullivan, an experienced corporate restructuring and bankruptcy lawyer, has joined the firm as partner in its corporate department and a member of the newly formed Restructuring & Insolvency practice. Sullivan’s addition continues the growth of the firm’s New York office, which has grown by almost 25 percent in the past three years with top-tier practitioners in a variety of practice areas.

“We are excited to continue the upward growth trajectory of our New York office and our Corporate department with the arrival of James,” said New York Managing Partner John P. Napoli. “Our clients have expanded our remit to include most aspects of their business operations, so this is a client-driven expansion, meeting their needs both for the practice area and geographically.”

Sullivan was previously a partner at Windels Marx where he represented corporate debtors, banks, secured and unsecured creditors, creditors’ committees, trustees and distressed investors in large Chapter 11 cases. In addition to his bankruptcy and restructuring work, Sullivan has a corporate transactional practice, including counseling borrowers and lenders in acquisition and corporate financing, and he also handles commercial and real estate litigation matters.

“James’s depth of experience in insolvency counseling and distressed transactions, bankruptcy-related litigation, debtor/creditor relations and trustee representation, is synergistic with our newly formed Restructuring & Insolvency practice and its needs,” said Steven R. Meier, chair of the firm’s Corporate department. “In addition, James’s significant experience and capabilities in national distressed transactions greatly enhance our current offering in this area.”

Sullivan regularly authors and lectures on numerous bankruptcy topics, including purchasing assets out of bankruptcy and the interplay between bankruptcy and cryptocurrency. He earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A., magna cum laude, from Boston College.

“I have been seeking a broader platform for my clients where there is substantial opportunity for cross-selling and collaboration,” said Sullivan. “I am particularly excited to work alongside Jason DeJonker again and the new Restructuring & Insolvency team. The ability to do that and work with some of the best in the business is an incredible opportunity.”

DeJonker joined Seyfarth last month and launched the firm’s Restructuring & Insolvency practice. He and Sullivan worked together previously at McDermott Will & Emery LLP.
