Seyfarth Shaw was featured and Stephen Poor was quoted in the September 14, 2009 ABA Journal Daily Newsletter article, "Seyfarth Shaw Says Six Sigma Method Has Cut Client Fees Up to 50 Percent." The article discussed the role of Six Sigma at Seyfarth Shaw, referencing the section of the firm's Web site on SeyfarthLean, "which is used to eliminate inefficiencies that can push legal bills higher, resulting in cost savings to clients ranging from 13 percent to 50 percent." Below is an excerpt from the questions and answers section of the article:
ABA Journal: When and why did the law firm embrace Six Sigma? Can you provide an example of how it works in practice?
Poor: "Outstanding client service has always been a hallmark of Seyfarth Shaw, and several years ago the firm began exploring ways in which we could deliver better value for our services as defined by our clients… SeyfarthLean enables us to partner with our clients to commit to a price for a matter through a collaborative process that is transparent…"
ABA Journal: Do all of your clients embrace Six Sigma?
Poor: "Lean Six Sigma works best with clients who are committed to partnering with their law firms to achieve value, as defined by the client…. So far, most of the clients that we've presented the SeyfarthLean approach to have found it to be a unique and exciting way to approach their relationship with their law firm…. Lean Six Sigma, as we've adapted it, enables attorneys to focus their time on activities that add value to the client…, [such as] uncovering evidence or developing novel legal argument. The process maximizes the attorney's efficiency by: driving out the inefficient tasks that don't add value to the process, making sure that the right timekeepers perform the appropriate tasks, crafting a roadmap for the team to follow so everyone knows what they need to do and when they need to do it, which taken all together helps the attorneys go the extra mile for the client."
