Seyfarth Shaw LLP announces participation in the Chicago Climate Exchange
June 9, 2005 (Chicago, Illinois) – Seyfarth Shaw LLP recently announced that it will become a Participant in the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX). In becoming an Exchange Participant, Seyfarth Shaw will establish a CCX Registry Account for the purpose of acquiring and retiring CCX Carbon Financial Instruments (CFIs). CFIs are the CCX’s currency. One CFI is equal to 100 metric tons of carbon dioxide. Seyfarth Shaw will purchase and permanently retire CFIs as part of North America’s first voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction and trading program.
“We are excited to be one of the first law firms to join CCX,” said Eric Boyd, a partner in Seyfarth Shaw’s Environmental, Safety and Toxic Tort practice group. “Although we are not a major source of greenhouse gases, we look forward to exploring opportunities for offsetting emissions and helping clients navigate legal issues associated with alternative energy use and greenhouse gas reduction.”
By purchasing CFIs, entities encourage and fund activities that reduce GHG emissions and promote energy and transportation efficiency, renewable energy and carbon sequestration, among a host of environmental beneficial activities.
CCX is a self-regulatory exchange that administers the world’s first multi-national, multi-sector marketplace for reducing and trading GHG emissions. It is the first legally binding commitment by a cross-section of North American corporations, municipalities and other institutions to establish a rules-based market for reducing greenhouse gases. CCX enables members to receive credit for emission reductions and to buy and sell credits in an effort to determine the most cost-effective means of achieving emission reductions.
