NEW YORK (December 5, 2023) - Seyfarth Shaw LLP has announced that Alan Wilmit has joined the international law firm as a partner in its Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Department. He will be based in the firm’s New York office.

Wilmit comes to Seyfarth from Goldman Sachs & Co. LLC, where he headed the legal department’s ERISA, Compensation and Benefits group for nearly 25 years. In that role, he provided legal advice with respect to Goldman’s executive compensation and employee benefit plans, programs, and arrangements, as well as its buy and sell side products and services.

“Alan Wilmit’s 35 years of experience as both inside and outside counsel and his deep financial industry knowledge further bolsters our highly regarded Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation department, and will prove to be a tremendous asset for our clients,” said Diane Dygert, who chairs the department. “Alan’s technical know-how, broad experience and the unique perspective he brings from having been at Goldman Sachs and a leading industry lawyer in the retirement and savings space for over two decades will yield additional business development opportunities and provide our clients with the wide range of capabilities on which we have built our reputation.”

Wilmit also has been an industry leader having co-chaired the Securities Industry and Financial markets Association’s (“SIFMA’s”) Retirement and Savings Committee for almost 15 years and most recently co-chairing SIFMA’s Asset Management Group.

“I am excited to join Seyfarth Shaw and add to its already world-class employee benefits, executive compensation and ERISA practice,” said Wilmit. “The opportunity to join Seyfarth, with its extremely talented and dynamic team, its commitment to excellence and innovation and its dedication to maintaining a top-tier employee benefits, executive compensation and ERISA platform convinced me it was time to move back into private practice after having an unbelievably gratifying career at Goldman Sachs.”

Wilmit joined Goldman Sachs in 1999, shortly after its initial public offering. He became a legal director (ERISA & Benefits) in 2004 and a Managing Director in 2006. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Wilmit was a partner at Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, LLP. He was also an assistant general counsel at Salomon Brothers, Inc. and an associate at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton.

“Adding a highly accomplished lawyer with Alan Wilmit’s industry experience and reputation will extend further our relationships with leading financial institutions here in New York, this time in the vital function of providing benefits for their employees,” said John Napoli and Marc Gurell, co-managing partners of Seyfarth’s New York office. “We are thrilled that Alan decided to join Seyfarth after such a successful tenure at Goldman Sachs as we continue to expand our New York office.”

Wilmit is the fourth lateral partner to move to Seyfarth in New York in 2023.

Wilmit earned a JD, cum laude, from Cornell Law School and a BA, magna cum laude, from Tufts University.
