Seyfarth is a sponsor of the 63rd Annual Hawaii Tax Institute on November 15-19 in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Ofer Lion, partner in Seyfarth's Corporate department and chair of the firm's Tax Exempt practice, will serve as a speaker during the sessions, "The Nonprofit Power Hour," on November 16. Get up to speed on current developments and hot topics impacting charitable giving and tax-exempt organizations. This session will address the impacts on the nonprofit sector given the latest from the executive branch and what folks have been doing in light of the myriad Executive Orders, new Treasury Regulations, federal legislation, prominent cases, state laws and State Attorney General oversight; split-dollar executive compensation plans; and the long-overdue move towards consolidation in the nonprofit sector. Learn to look ahead and analyze emerging trends and new and improved strategic planning opportunities. Ofer will also speak during the session,  "Beyond the IRS: Nonprofit Strategies to Address Heightened Scrutiny from the Newly Created DOJ National Fraud Enforcement Division and Ethical Considerations," on November 17. Exempt organizations (EOs), such as charities and nonprofits, are subject to both civil and criminal enforcement by the IRS when they violate tax laws, engage in private inurement, or abuse their tax-exempt status. The April 2026 creation of the DOJ National Fraud Enforcement Division to centralize and aggressively enforce criminal and civil laws against fraud targeting federal government programs, benefits, businesses and nonprofits nationwide, signals further heightened and coordinated focus on exempt organizations and other entities receiving federal funds. This session will discuss nonprofit compliance strategies and ethical considerations to address the current enforcement environment.
