Reaction to the Attack on the U.S. Capitol

January 7, 2021

Colleagues,

Like most of you, I watched yesterday’s events in Washington D.C. in disbelief. Never did I imagine seeing a physical attack of this nature on the democratic institutions that guide this nation. These were not just destructive acts against property, they struck at the heart of our Constitution and our values. Seyfarth unequivocally condemns the violent actions that played out in our nation’s capital yesterday.

We practice law because we believe in the rule of law. And ultimately, the rule of law won out. We should take heart that our democracy held and our Congressional leaders resumed their work and finished the confirmation of President-Elect Biden. Difficult days remain in front of us as we grapple with truth and unity while fighting a worsening global pandemic, but our country can and will work to solve these problems.

At this moment in history we must have resolve and keep our faith in the rule of law. We must continue leading our families, friends, and communities in the search for solutions to the issues we face. And we must also continue to care for one another as we have throughout this past year of crisis. Please, check on your friends and colleagues here, especially those in our DC office.

Let’s not give up on the optimism that fueled our entry into this new year. As a firm, and as Americans, I know we will do everything we can to help our country become better and stronger.

Stay safe,

Pete
