Speakers:

Kara Dodson, Volta

Kara has over twenty years of experience in the legal community. She started her career practicing employment law for a decade at an AmLaw 100 firm, where she also mentored summer associates and junior associates. Tapping into her passion for coaching and counseling, Kara transitioned to the business side of law as the Director of Recruiting and Professional Development at Young Conaway. Over the course of her seven years at Young Conway, Kara hired, developed and coached the firm’s associates. She also designed and implemented the firm's business development training and coaching program. In 2015, Kara joined Volta, bringing her together her experience of practicing law and working on the business side of law. At Volta, Kara coaches lawyers of all levels, in a variety of areas including business development, time management, effective communication, stress management, leadership, and delegation. Kara has also coached a number of attorneys through their partnership promotion process. She is a graduate of the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching, holds her PCC credential from the International Coaching Federation, and is certified to administer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®). Kara graduated from Lafayette College with a B.A. in English Literature with high honors and was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities grant for her research and thesis. She received her law degree cum laude from Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, where she also currently serves as an adjunct professor. While in law school, Kara served as an editor and staff member of the Temple Law Review.

Lane Vanderslice, Volta

Lane provides strategic advice to law firm leaders, as well as helping to design and implement effective mentoring and coaching programs, with a particular focus on programs supporting high performing senior associates, new partners and diverse attorneys. In addition, Lane provides coaching, career counseling and career transition counseling services to partners, associates and professional development specialists. Prior to joining Volta, Lane served as the Special Assistant to the Chairman of Mayer Brown, a role he assumed after spending several years as the firm's full-time Partner for Associate Development. During his tenure at Mayer Brown, Lane created the first in-house coaching/career counseling program at a US law firm, and in that role counseled hundreds of attorneys – from new associates to partners and practice leaders. In addition, he oversaw the transformation of the firm’s evaluation and compensation systems, facilitated the development of a US-wide training and development program and created a comprehensive first-year curriculum and coaching program aimed at improving integration and long- term success. Lane was a leader of Mayer Brown’s diversity initiative, which was the recipient of the Minority Corporate Council Association’s Thomas L. Sager Award in 2006. Lane obtained his BA from Columbia College summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and his JD from Columbia University School of Law, where he was Managing Editor of the Columbia Law Review, a James Kent Scholar, winner of the James A. Elkins Prize in Constitutional Law and a recipient of the Jane Marks Murphy Prize for advocacy in clinical offerings. After law school, Lane clerked for Judge Walter J. Cummings of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition, Lane is certified by the Behavioral Coaching Institute (BCI) as a master coach
