Bart Lazar was quoted in the September 11, 2009 Processor Magazine article, “Twitter: Friend or Foe?” The article discussed the confusion organizations face in terms of risks, management and policy resulting from the immense popularity of social media although the medium is in its infancy. According to the article, building and enforcing a policy can help organizations control what employees are posting on social media sites to not only avoid risks, but also take advantage of marketing and other opportunities.

Bart noted that “the potential legal liabilities of social networking are extensive, particularly because user-generated content in these media can be hard or even impossible to alter or delete.” Bart provided a list of potential social liability risks, including: intellectual property infringement, trade secrets and confidential information being exposed, SEC issues, and potential employment issues.

Bart recommended training official enterprise spokespeople in social messaging and limiting other employees through policies, training, or other methods to prevent them from claiming to be unofficial or even official representatives of an enterprise.
