Bob Tollen is quoted in the article, "Big Trouble May Be Brewing for Starbucks Over Barista Tips," published in the March 12, 2008 issue of The Recorder. The article discusses a trial brought by a class of approximately 120,000 baristas employed by Starbucks in their California branches since 2000. The class seeks roughly $100 million for restitution and interest concerning tips they claim they were forced to share with some managers in California stores.

With regard to why the Plaintiffs dropped their initial Labor Code claim and instead focused their argument on California’s unfair competition law (UCL), Bob pointed out that the UCL offers a four-year statute of limitations, whereas some Labor Code claims stop at three. “So the basic motivation [might be] to get that additional year going backwards,” he noted.
