Camille Olson Quoted in The Wall Street Journal
“Work & Family MailBox”
Camille Olson was quoted September 8, 2009 in The Wall Street Journal column, “Work & Family MailBox.” The letter writer’s wife was laid off shortly after informing her bosses of her pregnancy. Among 50 employees, she was the only person let go. According to the letter writer, this happened just two weeks after management announced a 10% pay cut for all workers, reportedly to avoid layoffs. The letter writer felt that this was not fair and sought advice.
Camille recommended that the letter writer consider whether there may have been "a legitimate nondiscriminatory reason" for his wife’s layoff. She further noted that the letter writer should consider encouraging his wife to talk to her employer and say "she is confused, that she wants to understand the decision, that she was hoping that this 10% pay cut was going to do the trick," and to ask about possible severance pay.
