Dawn Lurie Quoted in SHRM on I-9 Compliance During Government Shutdowns

SHRM quoted senior counsel Dawn Lurie in its article, “Federal Government Shutdown Doesn't Mean the Clock Stops for HR,” published on September 25. Lurie emphasized that even when E-Verify is offline during a federal shutdown, employers remain responsible for complying with Form I-9 requirements.

“There are a lot of other things employers have to worry about on compliance,” Lurie said. “I don't think this is one of them.” She acknowledged the frustration federal contractors may face when E-Verify is down but reminded employers that technological outages aren’t limited to shutdowns, with I-9 obligations persisting regardless.
