Devjani Mishra was quoted in the article, “Discrimination One Step Removed,” published May 13, 2008 by Human Resource Executive.

The article reported on a recent federal appeals court decision permitting a jury to hear a discrimination lawsuit that claims a white employee was fired because his wife is black. If successful, it could expand the number of employees protected by bias laws and may require a company handbook rewrite.

Devjani remarked that this case should give employers the impetus to make sure their discrimination policies have "some teeth" and are enforced. Devjani also noted, “The fact is, several states are moving towards a broader definition of who is protected…. Most policies say absolutely no discrimination is acceptable, and don’t get into who is protected and who isn’t.”

Devjani concluded that, “You have to be vigilant in HR, and keep this out in front of people, especially on the highest levels of management.”
