Ellen McLaughlin was quoted in the May 25, 2010 SHRM Online article, "Sanitized’ Performance Reviews Could Later Haunt Employers." The article discussed problems that can arise from sanitized performance reviews, which can mask an employees’ negative behavior and can occur for a number of reasons. According to Ellen, “Noncandid performance reviews occur fairly frequently. They make a case difficult to defend.” She also pointed out that “Some managers don’t want to deal with reviews. Either [they] are not trained and don’t understand the value of a performance review, or they find it difficult to be candid.”
