INS Actively Enforcing Law on Change of Address
In direct response to the events of September 11th, the INS is aggressively enforcing a “change of address” law that has been on the books for many years. This law requires all non-U.S. citizens living in the United States to report changes in address to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (“INS”) within 10 days of the address change. The individual is required to announce the address change through filing Form AR-11 with the INS in Washington, D.C. Non-U.S. citizens who do not report a change of address within 10 days could be fined up to $200.00, spend up to 30 days in jail – or both. In a worst case scenario, an individual could be deported if he or she is unable to provide reasonable excuse for the lack of notification. The Form AR-11 and accompanying instructions can be found below. Please let us know if you have further questions.
