"Employers Beware of Labor Bills"
Jack Toner’s article, "Employers Beware of Labor Bills," was published in the October 31, 2008 issue of the Washington Business Journal. In his article, Jack stresses that employers in the Washington area must be mindful there are a number of other important pending legislation proposals regarding labor issues, other than the well-known Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), that would adversely impact employers. Jack explains that these other less-visible labor bills may likely pass even if EFCA is defeated since they are sponsored by Democratic legislators who will probably have an even stronger majority in the next Congress. Three of the main bills Jack discusses are the Honest Leadership and Accountability in Contracting Act, the Respect Act, and the Teaching and Research Assistant Collective Rights Bargaining Rights Act. According to Jack, similar to EFCA, "these bills are designed to make union organizing easier and to give unions greater economic leverage. It is important that employers not lose sight of these other proposals and are prepared to respond."
