Jeff Wortman and Gregg Fisch Featured in the Business & Legal Report's HR.BLR.com
"4 Keys to Fair Disciplinary Actions"
Jeff Wortman and Gregg Fisch presented last week at BLR's Second Annual National Employment Law Update held in Las Vegas, in a three hour seminar entitled: "The Most Common Mistakes Your Supervisors Make--And How You Can Get Them To Stop." The focus of the seminar was to promote effective techniques to ensure that supervisors will be viewed as fair in a variety of activities including performance evaluations, investigations, disciplinary actions, documentation and discipline. Jeff and Gregg were featured in the October 17, 2008 issue of the Business & Legal Report's HR.BLR.com in the article, "4 Keys to Fair Disciplinary Actions." The article addressed some highlights of the interactive presentation, including a discussion how HR managers must help instruct new supervisors on how to handle their new positions because they often do not understand their new power and how it can be interpreted by employees. Jeff explained that "New supervisors are used to being one of the gang and when they get promoted, they think they are still part of the gang. But the things they say as supervisors take on a different flavor." Jeff and Gregg also addressed issues arising from deciding whether and how to discipline and/or discharge an employee. Jeff said that the bottom line for most cases is perception of fairness.
