Laura Maechtlen Quoted in Bay Windows
"BU Law’s LGBT Group Celebrates 30 Years Of Service To Students and Society"
Laura Maechtlen was quoted in the article, "BU Law’s LGBT Group Celebrates 30 Years Of Service To Students and Society," which appeared in the November 20, 2008 issue of Bay Windows. The article reported on the 30th anniversary celebration of Boston University School of Law’s LGBT group, Outlaw. On November 14, 2008 the LGBT student group along with BU alumni and faculty gathered at BU’s castle to celebrate. Laura, an invited speaker at the celebration, was highlighted in the article as an alumna who has had an impact inside and outside the LGBT community. As she stated in the article, "OutLaw was responsible for the trajectory of my own legal career." Laura explained that when she first came to BU, OutLaw gave her a sense of community that she relied on personally and professionally throughout her law school career. She further explained that after graduation, connections from OutLaw and other BU groups helped to secure her current job and led to her being asked to join the board of the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association (NLGLA). As head of NLGLA, she hopes to establish the same sense of community that she found at OutLaw, but on a national level. Laura noted that "All of this is where I’ve ended up after becoming involved in OutLaw here at BU." She advised current law students to "Be a joiner. Get involved."
