Lawrence P. Postol of Seyfarth Shaw Elected Public Member to Board of Directors of the American Board of Industrial Hygiene

Washington, D.C. (March 12, 2008) - - Seyfarth Shaw LLP, one of America’s leading full-service law firms, announced that Lawrence P.  Postol, a Labor & Employment partner in the firm's Washington, D.C. office, has been named a Public Member to the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).  ABIH is the certifying organization for Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIHs).  Earning the CIH requires that candidates meet rigorous education and experience requirements, pass an examination, and recertify every five years by fulfilling continuing education requirements. More than 6,500 industrial hygienists currently hold the CIH designation.

The American Board of Industrial Hygiene notes, "An Industrial Hygienist (IH) is a professional who is dedicated to the health and well-being of the worker. Typically, this would have an IH evaluating the health effects of chemicals or noise in a work place. This has been expanded a bit by the changing of society from an industrial/agricultural base to more of a service economy to address issues of productivity. It also now relates to an expansion of workplace to areas of the community outside the traditional place of employment."

As a Public Member of the ABIH Board, Postol provides a broad legal perspective to issues before the ABIH.  In Postol's Labor & Employment practice, he advises clients as to OSHA compliance issues, and he represents companies in OSHA litigation. Additionally, Postol has extensive experience in workers’ compensation defense, toxic tort litigation, and counseling and environmental litigation.  He has successfully argued over two dozen cases in the United States Court of Appeals and two cases before the United States Supreme Court.  Postol has a BS in Engineering Physics (with honors) from Cornell University in addition to his JD (cum laude) from Cornell Law School.
