Employment partner Marshall Babson was quoted in an April 18 Human Resource Executive Online article. The article discussed how the GOP plan to defund the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has failed for the time being, although funding remains at risk while negotiations on the 2012 budget begin.

Marshall, who is a former member of the NLRB, commented, "Republicans in the control of the House are concerned about budget matters, as all reasonable people should be." He further commented, "But the size and scope of the cuts ... would have [had] a serious, adverse impact on the day-to-day operations of agency, both in the field and in Washington."

Marshall admits the NLRB's workload may not be what it was 20 years ago, "but my understanding is that it adjusted to changes in case load a long time ago, and I don't think people are sitting around there with nothing to do," adding that staff levels have come down considerably since the time he served on the board between 1985 and 1988.
