Michael Burns Quoted in the Los Angeles/San Francisco Daily Journal, The Recorder, Law.com, Associated Press and More Regarding the Slew of Class Actions Filed Following the Opinion in Pineda v. Williams-Sonoma Stores Inc.
San Francisco employment partner Michael Burns was quoted in numerous articles regarding the California Supreme Court’s ruling in the Pineda v. Williams-Sonoma Stores Inc. suit and the subsequent following of close to two dozen lawsuits against major retailers doing business in California. The lawsuits claim that stores cannot ask for zip code information from customers because it can be used as personal identification information. Mike, who represented the retailer Michaels Stores in a similar lawsuit, said that several class action lawsuits on the zip code issue are pending throughout the state and he is predicting more lawsuits to be filed because of the Pineda ruling. Mike explained that “it’s going to have a significant impact on California retailers.” He further explained there are still legal questions regarding whether merchants can ask for similar information from patrons paying with cash, debit cards and gift cards.
