Robert Milligan was quoted in the April 2, 2010 SHRM Online article, “Tidy Your Lawn Before Moving to Greener Pastures.” The article discussed how a high-level human resources executive at a national 120,000-employee transportation company resigned professionally and tactfully to ensure a smooth transition for the company, the employees and for her successor.

According to the article, the HR executive agreed to stay for one month to parcel out unfinished projects, organize files and train her replacement. In return, the company paid her COBRA health premiums and gave her a severance package as a way of showing their appreciation for her professionalism. The article pointed out the importance of maintaining your integrity when resigning. Robert noted, “Be open and transparent. Don’t print lists of customers, burn sales figures to a disk or e-mail documents to yourself. You’re not doing your new employer any favors by taking documents or information. And it can lead to litigation.”  Robert also noted how technology has a footprint and employers have records of your actions.
