(May 11, 2022) -- Seyfarth has named Ashley K. Cano its new Pro Bono & Philanthropy Partner. Cano was previously a partner in Seyfarth’s Labor & Employment department in Chicago. In this new role, Cano leads a multifaceted program that includes pro bono legal services, charitable giving, community service, and sustainability. You can read more about Seyfarth’s recent pro bono and philanthropic activities here.

Cano succeeds Allegra Nethery, who helped create the position and has overseen the firm’s program for the last 15 years. In addition to her role at Seyfarth, Nethery served in professional leadership roles as the president of the Chicago Bar Foundation and president of the Association of Pro Bono Counsel.

“Ashley is a tremendously skilled lawyer with an authentic passion for serving others. We are fortunate to have her respected leadership at the helm of our active Pro Bono & Philanthropy program,” said Pete Miller, Seyfarth’s chair and managing partner. “We wish Allegra the best of luck in all of her future endeavors and are grateful that she built a program that provides countless paths for community service. Her influence on our firm’s culture is profound and her efforts have had a massive impact on the lives of others.”

Since joining Seyfarth in 2011, Cano has been deeply involved in the firm’s pro bono efforts. She has been an active member of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee since 2015 and, in 2016, her contributions to Seyfarth’s pro bono efforts were recognized when she was named Pro Bono Associate of the Year. During her career, she has been actively involved with Ascend Justice, helping victims of domestic violence obtain orders of protection against their abusers in Court. Notably, Cano has coordinated summer fellows’ participation in volunteer shifts with Ascend Justice and, in 2020, she received its Champion of Justice award.

“The opportunity to lead Seyfarth’s Pro Bono & Philanthropy program is nothing short of a dream come true for me and I am so excited to continue to build upon Allegra’s amazing work. I’m also really looking forward to connecting with more people across the firm to further advance Seyfarth’s reputation as a firm that is committed to playing an active, positive role in the communities in which we work and live,” said Cano.

In addition to her pro bono work, Cano has been very involved in Seyfarth’s community service and sustainability efforts. Every year she participates in the Girl Up Global 5K, volunteers with Cradles to Crayons, and participates in the firm’s Earth Day initiatives. She is currently a member of the board of directors for Cabrini Green Legal Aid, an organization dedicated to social justice and to helping those who have been negatively impacted by the criminal legal system.

Cano received her J.D. and her B.S.B.A., both magna cum laude, from Georgetown University.
