Seyfarth Shaw LLP Welcomes Former NLRB Executive Secretary John J. Toner to Firm
Washington, DC (October 25, 2005) - - Seyfarth Shaw LLP, one of America’s leading full-service law firms, today announced that John (Jack) J. Toner has joined the firm in its Washington, DC office as of counsel in its nationally recognized labor and employment practice group.
Toner is widely known for the significant roles he has held in government labor relations positions. Before joining Seyfarth Shaw, he was Chief of Staff for the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), an independent U.S. government agency that preserves and promotes labor-management peace and cooperation. Immediately prior to that, Toner was Executive Secretary of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the independent federal agency that administers the National Labor Relations Act, where he was responsible for the overall operation and management of the NLRB’s judicial and administrative affairs. During Toner’s twenty year association with the NLRB, he was the professional, technical and administrative consultant to Board Members on major legal and policy matters in unfair labor practice cases, representation cases, and jurisdictional disputes.
“Jack’s noteworthy career in labor relations at government agencies such as the NLRB, the IRS, the Social Security Administration and the FMCS has afforded him unique perspective and insight into labor-management relations,” noted Jeremy P. Sherman, the national chairperson of Seyfarth Shaw’s Labor and Employment Practice Group. “He has an exceptional understanding of the issues and the influencers in labor relations. His experience will significantly enhance the counsel we provide to our clients.”
Seyfarth Shaw has one of the most widely known management labor and employment practices in the United States. The firm was established over sixty years ago to concentrate on labor relations counseling and litigation. This commitment to labor relations remains a cornerstone of Seyfarth Shaw’s labor and employment practice. Many of the firm’s attorneys have groundbreaking experience in labor law matters, including cases under the National Labor Relations Act, the Railway Labor Act and state labor laws. The firm also counsels management on labor relations issues arising from mergers and acquisitions, shutdowns, relocations and other business reorganizations.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to join Seyfarth Shaw,” stated Toner. “I have worked closely with many of the firm’s attorneys when they were with the NLRB or through various labor industry groups and associations. I am looking forward to complementing my long career in government service with my new association with Seyfarth Shaw.”
Toner received a B.A. in Labor-Management Relations from Pennsylvania State University and his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Labor and Employment Section and was vice president of finance for the Association of Labor Relations Agencies, an association of impartial government agencies in the United States and Canada responsible for administering labor-management relations laws or services.
