Seyfarth Shaw's Pro Bono Work Highlighted on Los Angeles ABC News
"Lawsuit: Cops Targeted Black Barbershops"Broadcast
Seyfarth Shaw was highlighted, along with co-counsel the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Southern California, on the Los Angeles ABC News station, KABC-TV, April 8, 2009. The station also ran a complementary article, "Lawsuit: Cops Targeted Black Barbershops," on their Web site. The news broadcast covered a press conference announcing the filing of the case, which involves the Moreno Valley Police Department. The station noted how Seyfarth Shaw attorneys, Stacy Shartin and Rishi Puri, along with the ACLU, filed an 11-page complaint in the U.S. District Court in Riverside, alleging that the city of Moreno Valley, its police department and the California Board of Barbering & Cosmetology violated the civil rights of three Moreno Valley barbers and their customers. During the press conference, Stacy articulated that the lawsuit is not an indictment of the municipality or its police department broadly, rather they overstepped their bounds in this case. He also explained that if successful, this decision will hopefully have an impact on future practices by the defendants.
