The United States Chamber of Commerce’s Report, “The Impact of State Employment Policies on Job Growth: A 50 State Review,” was featured in a March 14 article in Foster’s Daily Democrat. The report, which was based on an analysis conducted by Seyfarth Shaw, analyzes the impact of various nationwide labor and employment laws on job creation and economic growth. It contains an “Employment Regulation Index” measuring the extent of labor and employment regulation in each state, based upon 34 characteristics related to employment (including treatment of covenants not to compete, existence of state minimum wages in excess of federal, and the existence of right-to-work laws). In addition, the report places each of the 50 states into one of three tiers – “Good,” “Fair,” and “Poor” – based on their level of labor and employment regulation. The article in Foster’s Daily Democrat highlights the results for New Hampshire, which was given a Tier II or “fair” rating, and Maine, which was given a Tier III or “poor” rating.
