Bill Perkins was featured in an interview in the April 9, 2008 issue of Corporate Counsel Weekly. The interview consisted of questions relating to corporations and unemployment benefits.

With regard to the procedures that a corporation should have in place to monitor unemployment claims filed by former employees, Bill notes, “Control of unemployment claims can be accomplished in two ways: internally or through an outsourcer.” He remarks that since outsourcing companies tend to be national in scope, they tend to have “people on the ground who are aware of the specific requirements” of the different jurisdictions in which corporations have employees. When asked about the general procedure to contest an unemployment claim, Bill observes, “The first decision to be made is whether there is any value to contest the claim.” Bill notes that typical situations that would disqualify former employees from collecting unemployment benefits include circumstances in which “the employee was fired for theft, workplace stalking or violence, having a patently unsatisfactory attendance record or if he or she engaged in sexual harassment,” among other situations.
